Walden University was founded in 1970 by Bernie and Rita Turner. It now offers certificates and degress to inlcude bachelors, masters, and doctoral. The founders had a shared vision of creating a student-centered university that focused on social change. Also, they thought it important to allow professionals to continue working while earning a degree.
Walden University maintains two types of accreditation, which include institutional and specialized. Currently it is accredited by The Higher Learning Commission. It is a member of the North Central Association, which is one of six regional accrediting associations recognized by the US Department of Education. This regional association is also recognized by the Council for Higher Education (CHEA)
Walden University is also currently accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE), Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP), the Global Accreditation Center (GAC) of Project Management Institute (PMI), the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), and the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Education Programs (CACREP).
Walden University areas of study include business, management, communication, new media, counseling, human services, criminal justice, emergency management, education, health sciences, information technology, nursing, psychology, public policy, and administration.
