Iowa College Acquisition Corporation, a company that owns and operates for-profit colleges, operates Kaplan University as a DBA – “doing business as.” The corporation is owned by Kaplan, Inc., a subsidiary of Graham Holdings Company. Kaplan University is predominantly an online education institution. It is regionally accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. It was names in honor of Stanley Kaplan, who founded Kaplan Test Prep.

Kaplan University was first established in 1937 as the American Institute of Commerce. After Kaplan, Inc. acquired as a part of their purchase of Quest Education Corporation in November 2000, the name was changed to Kaplan College.

Kaplan University’s school of nursing received its national professional accreditation in 2006 for its Bachelors of Science in Nursing degree. That was issued by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). The university expanded in 2007 when all seven Iowa and Nebraska-based Hamilton College (Iowa) campuses merged with it. The Concord School of Law merged with Kaplan University in 2007, changing its name to Concord Law School of Kaplan University. (Law student graduates are allowed to take the California bar examination even though the school is not accredited by the American Bar Association (ABA)

Kaplan University serves more than 66,000 online and on-campus students. Degrees offer include associate’s, bachelor’s, and master’s. They also offer certificates in education, business, information technology, arts and sciences, healthcare, nursing, criminal justice, and legal studies. Kaplan University is based in Davenport, Iowa. However, the main administration building is in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Its more than 3,600 instructors, professors, and administrators work either with their online programs or at one of their 10 campuses in Iowa, Nebraska, Maryland, and Wisconsin.
