Capella University started out with an open enrollment policy, which allowed students to enroll provided that they could prove that they had previously received a high school degree or an equivalent, was a GED. Now new Capella University students who are not university or college transfers must complete a university-approved examination prior to be considered for admission. Their focus is on their graduate programs, with 76% of their students being in their MBA, MS, PhD, or PsyD programs. 95% of their students are enrolled part-time.

As an online university, Capella University primarily uses the Internet using Blackboard Learning System software. Their non-online components largely involve doctoral-level residency requirements as well as for some of the master’s degree candidates. A highly controversial issue is their willingness to provide a limited number of credits through prior learning assessment programs. This allows students to receive credit for previous experience related to their coursework. This feature is often attacked by accreditation authorities and others as it signifies that Capella University is offering degrees at a lower standard that other post-secondary institutions.
