STRONG>Ashford University is a for-profit university owned by Bridgeport Education. It is located in Clinton, Iowa. It is accredited by The Higher Learning Commission (HLC), which is part of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.
STRONG>Ashford University was originally established in 1893. At that time it was called Mount St. Clare Academy, which as a boarding school for girls. In 1918, the Sisters founded Mount Claire College to provide higher education opportunities for the Clinton County area. The college was first accredited in 1950 by the North Central Association of Colleges. The name of the college was changed to The Franciscan University in 2003, which is the same year that it received approval first master’s degree online. In 2004, it became The Franciscan University of the Prairies and then changed its name to Ashford University once Bridgeport Education purchased the school. Its association with the Sisters of St Francis ended at that time.
STRONG>Ashford University accreditation status has come under question since June of 2012. The Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) rejected Ashford’s request citing low numbers in full-time faculty and high school dropout rates. This prompted requests for more information from HLC.
STRONG>Ashford University offers several bachelor’s degrees as well as masters in organizational management (MA), business administration (MBA), and public administration (MPA).
